The sacrifice of Christ on the cross and its redemptive significance for humanity are at the heart of the iconographic program that unfolds on both sides of the object. On the obverse dominates the theme of the Crucifixion, made present to the faithful by the wood of the cross supposed to be contained in the relic box. On the reverse, the iconography refers to the eschatological dimension of Christ's sacrifice and the vision of his triumph at the end of time.
